Today's Fortune for a fiver
3 £1 doubles £1 ew treble
Atomic Jack 12.50 @ 6/1
Cudgel 2.55 @ 11/4
Gustavian 3.10 @ 2/1
Selected Warwick – good ground on this flat and sharp track
11.55 Lustleigh brings decent experience to the table , which is always a positive against newcomers to hurdling , but both Adagio and Duke of Condicote were pretty decent on the flat , and it’s looking tough to call .
12.25 Nicky Henderson’s Bothwell bridge ran to a high level in both bumper races last season and should be fine at this longer trip on his hurdles bow . Tough task for both Fraternal and Wilde About Oscar giving him weight . Looks a most solid bet for those of you who like to bang on a shorty .
¾ pt win Bothwell Bridge @ 4/5
1.00A very interesting novice chase withs couple of useful hurdlers trying fences for the first time . The penny dropped for Fred as the season progressed but his best form is on softer ground while the front running Allmankind ended last season with a brave 3rd in the Triumph Hurdle but is another who would prefer softer ground and hardly bred for fences . This is a tricky jumping test and the experience of the useful and determined Stolen Silver is a major positive . He handled similar ground well when 3rd behind a pair of useful types on chase debut and is preferred today .
½ pt win Stolen silver @ 2/1
1.35 The drop in trip is a big issue for King D’argent while the front running Kannoplis holds clear claims but a change of jockey not ideal as Tom Cannon has had little luck here . The consistent Sorbet is again likely to run her race and was 3rd over C&D last time , as usual given a patient ride , but has been nudged up an unwanted 3 pounds for her efforts. This is not a deep race and this could be her day , running these down late on .
¼ pt win Sorbet @ 11/4
2.10 Found myself going round in circles with this one
2.45 The fav is Wtite It Down but he hasn’t been at all convincing of late and you worry about Ebony Gale repeating his good run last time looking at his profile . Jarlath hasn’t done badly since resuming duties after a long break while Fresh New Dawn is another with a squeak . Magic River did well returning from a long break last time, but can he reproduce it second race back. The consistent Kilcara has been given a terrific chance by the handicapper returning from a year off . He won first time back last year , is a track winner and will be suited by the ground and will be swell ridden by Bryan Carver in a race for conditional jockeys .
½ pt win Kilcara @ 9/1
Selected Fontwell – good to soft on this sharp track
12.50 A short priced fav in the consistent Ocean Drifter who should be suited to the extra yardage , but quite a few dark horses here and prefer the chance of Atomic Jack , a tough stayer on the flat and did well on debut at Plumpton on quick ground and today’s longer trip and softer ground both in his favour .
½ pt win Atomic Jack @ 6/1
1.25 Deja Vue was the best of these over hurdles but this is close to call with her and the useful Danse Idol both first time over fences. Midnightreferendum is not entirely out of this either .
2.00 Alka Step took advantage of a dip in the ratings last time with a clear win over C&D on deep ground . the 4 pound hit could have been worse but the ground is not so severe today .Crossley Tender has a bit to prove switching from fences while Good News is up in the rating and in trip , which hasn’t helped in the past .
¼ pt win Alka Step @ 5/1
2.35 Go steady took off over fences last season with 3 wins from 4 but the drop in trip and the rise in the ratings wont help, but still well respected in a winnable heat . Finnegan’s Garden ended last season with a double but drying ground and a stiff mark makes this a big ask . Bad Boy Du Puldhu goes well here and was entitled to win well over C&D last time, but did it too well and now has a nasty 7 pound penalty . Go Long has a good record in Class 4 wins 2 wins and 2 places from 4 tries! The trip will be far enough and he may need the run , but preferred in a winnable heat .
¼ pt win Go Long @9/2
3.10 The Anthony Honeyball stable is in red hot form and has a terrific record here . He runs the consistent Gustavien , who doesn’t have a great deal to do in a winnable heat , but drying ground could be a problem .
½ pt win Gustavien @ 15/8
3.45 Kiwi Myth won this last year , first time back just like today and is only 5 pounds higher , but drying ground not ideal, but hard to fancy much in this and still preferred .
¼ pt win Kiwi Myth @ 3/1
Selected Hexham – heavy ground on this undulating , galloping and very stiff track
1.10 Despite the big field, most are very hard to fancy and understandable that Western Rambler is a warm order to double up his recent win over C&D, but he’s 7 pounds higher , carrying a big weight and form on heavy ground not good . Grand enterprise is reliable if frustrating with only 1 career win but goes well here , wont mind the ground and despite dropping in trip , will be staying on to effect in the closing stages.
¼ pt ew Grand enterprise @ 8/1
1.45 The useful Rayna’s World is a class ahead of these , at least . Track and ground no issue and should cope with the drop in trip , but is 1/4 !
2.20 A chance can b given to all five , despite none being prolific types . Sao used to be with Paul Nicholls , so fair to say was expected to do better than he’s done but was still going well when falling over C&D last time in the mud and overpriced for his chance.
¼ pt win Sao @ 7/1
2.55 The reliable Cudgel is suited by both the mud and the C&D . This tough customer ran well first time out last year but has been nudged up the weights , but still makes most appeal.
½ pt win Cudgel @ 11/4
3.30 McGinty’s dream was a good winner over C&D last time but the 8 pound hit will severely test . westend Theatre ran well in all runs last season including a win over C&D in the mud off a 5 pound lower mark . May not be at his very best first time back but in a winnable heat, well worth the risk at nice odds .
¼ pt win Westend Theatre @ 7/1
Selected Newcastle – all weather – tapeta . The track is stiff and galloping
4.00 PREMIUM RACE
4.30 Sylvestris finally broke his duck but has work to do to confirm form with Illustrator who was a close 4th in the Wolver event and gets the nod .
¼ pt win Illustrator @ 2/1
5.00 Thowq has run way below her mark the last twice while Daniel dernonda runs to a reasonable level and is effective here but is a long standing maiden. Basic Beauty is a newcomer for Godolphin who has to be respected a does Hong Kong Harry , a winner on debut on turf , so a bit to prove switching surface and carrying a penalty .
The rest of the races are very tough to work out with so many in form course regulars on now testing marks and I wont be playing in most of them . The exception is the 6.30 which is for members only
Selected Dundalk- all weather - polytrack
4.45 None of these have won and a few appear regressive and few have ran on this surface before. If desperate for a bet , looks to rest between Bluepower, Grey streak and Ola Bonita
5.The ultra consistent Colour Seegeant is running to a good level but switches from turf in his quest to break his duck but up against a couple of proven types here in Jeroboam And zozimus . Hard to be sure .
5.45 A right minefield and a clear chance can be given to many .
6.15 Split Passion did well here on debut but with unfancied horses filling the frame, the form could be unreliable . Hazel has the form to make an impact and a few interesting newcomers run for big stables .
6.45 Eglish is regular here and looked unlucky last time out . Back on a winning mark and this is not deep .
¼ pt win Eglish @ 9/2
7.15 Royal Marksman hasn’t had many tries and did well coming from way back to be 3rd over C&D last time . Nicely drawn and a nice longshot .
¼ pt ew Royal Marksman @ 10/1
7.45 The best race on the card and a fascinating contender in the ex English Harry’s Bar , , effective on the surface and brings comfortably the best form to the table and has joined a good stable . You would expect him to land this well , but not for me at evens
The Breeders Cup – Keeneland , the track is flat and sharp
On turf going is firm , dirt on the all weather
7.30 As you would expect in a juvenile sprint a cavalry of front runners with around 10 of the 14 known for trying to burn them off from the front and one of these is the fav Golden Pal, who has a doubly difficult job as there’s no chance of having an easy time of things trying to dominate and is also badly drawn. With so much early pace this looks destined for a finisher and with so many of the field al or nothing merchants, there are few late players . After Five has been 2nd in both of his runs , running well and coming off the pace . The drop in trip should be fine considering the strong pace expected and looks a most solid ew play . Canadian raider Dirty Dangle is an interesting longshot as she’s won both of her starts coming off the pace and is in the category of could be anything . First run for a respected stable today and a positive jockey booking .
½ pt ew After Five @ 9/1 ¼ pt ew Dirty Dangle @ 20/1 - small rev fc ??
8.10 The British Isles are well represented in this juvenile mile and the fav is Aidan O’Brien’s Battleground . He’s unexposed , as the majority are in this race , but only has a fair chance. A strong pace is again on the cards and I’m looking again for effective late players. English raider New Mandate has gone through the grades, starting his winning spree winning a nursery off just a mark of 81 but his latest two runs underline his ability . He came right off the pace to land a Listed race in style and gave them all a lead and a beating at this trip at Newmarket . He’s well drawn but the tight track and fast ground may not be ideal, but fairly priced for his chance . Of the home team Mutasaabeq makes most appeal as last time he came off the pace to win with ease over C&D on fast ground, landing a Group 2 .
¼ pt win New Mandate @ 4/1 ¼ pt ew Mutasaabeq @ 7/1 . small rev fc ??
8.50 Connections certainly knew what they were doing when purshasing Princess Noor, a costly $135,000 yearling but a mammoth $1,350,000 at a 2yo and she is 3 from 3 , and has come off the pace to win well the last twice in Group company . She’s up against some useful and consistent juveniles and 3 of them are unbeaten , but she has looked the real deal and hard to beat .
¾ pt win Princess Noor @ 2/1
9.30 A big field for this juvenile event and I’m looking no further than the front running Aunt Pearl , last time out here on fast ground . She was an expensive purchase as a yearling and looking at the racing styles of her rivals, wont have a tough time having her preferred sit at the head of affairs. Campanelle is 3 from 3 and brings top form to the table but the longer trip is a problem as it is for the useful Irish raider Miss Amulet .
¾ pt win Aunt Pearl @ 11/4
10.15 The bookies are making this practically a match between the front running Jackie’s Warrior who is 4 from 4 and Essential Quality who is 2 from 2 but with others likely to want to join in up front, preference is for the latter who can come off the pace running to a good level .
¾ pt win Essential Quality @ 4/1
